KLHS/KLPS is Pacemaker Winner!
The television broadcasting program in Liberty Public Schools has always been regarded as one of the best in the nation. Saturday, November 19, 2011, more proof was added to support this claim, as the Liberty High School broadcast, KLHS-TV News, was awarded with the prestigious Pacemaker Award at the National Scholastic Press Association's national conference in Minneapolis, MN.This is the second time in the past 10 years that KLHS/KLPS has been honored with the Pacemaker Award. KLHS/KLPS won the award in 2004 and has also been named a finalist several times over the past 10 years.
The Broadcast Pacemaker contest is co-sponsored by SchoolTube.com and the Radio Television Digital News Foundation. Entries consisted of an entire broadcast news program no longer than 20 minutes, and categories included Daily Programs, Weekly/Biweekly Programs, and Monthly or Less Programs.
A total of eleven Pacemaker finalists were chosen this year, with only three Pacemakers awarded nationally. The other schools receiving the national award were Springfield, MO Central High School and Grady High School in Atlanta, GA.
"The Pacemaker is known as the Pulitzer Prize of high school journalism," said KLHS teacher and sponsor Ann Bertoldie. "This is an affirmation to our students that the product they produce is one that is taken seriously and is worthy of acclaim by professionals."
Students involved with the winning show were: Taylor Hill, Director; Tom Kackley, Technical Director; Connor Hickox, Hannah Stine, Anchors; Shelby Hook, Sports Anchor; Josh Graham, Weather; Derek Brizendine, Taylor Uhlmann, Cameras; Taressa Alicie, Teleprompter; Hannah Knapp, Graphics; Kara Chabot, Audio; and Claire Cogan, Playback.
Along with producing a daily show for KLHS-TV News, broadcasting students from both Liberty High School and Liberty North High School submit work that is used regularly on the District's 24-hour cable outlet, KLPS-TV Channel 18, that serves the patrons of the Liberty school district.
"Our students realize that the positive comments they receive from people in the community and their peers at school might be even more important than any judge of a contest," Bertoldie said. "Those are the people they are serving, and these are the people they respect and hear from on a regular basis."
Along with the support provided by Bertoldie, KLPS-TV Channel 18 receives professional broadcasting support from Niles Media Group, based out of Liberty, MO.
